That is exactly why Grand Seiko chose the gothic script - they were impressed by and in thrall to notions of European luxury and craft, and adopted the incongruously Germanic font as a direct homage.

There are also vestiges of German cultural influence in Japan from wartime - I have a few examples of Japanese kana script rendered in a blackletter style on things like restaurant signage and logos, which kind of blew my mind when I saw it
